Mapúans continue to excel in exchange programs abroad

Aiming to provide its students with quality education and highly relevant professional trainings, Mapúa Institute of Technology has forged partnerships with several colleges and universities across the globe. One in particular is Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) in Taiwan, a Christian institution whose main priority is to provide its students with a holistic approach to education. In 2008, Mapúa signed a memorandum of agreement with CYCU that essentially encompasses collaborations in the areas of research as well as faculty and student development. Dr. Bonifacio T. Doma, Mapúa’s executive vice president for Academic Affairs, noted that CYCU is one of the best and technologically advanced private institutions in Taiwan. "Aside from its state-of-the-art research laboratories and equipment, one of the reasons we decided to partner with CYCU is because Taiwan is a member of the Washington Accord.” He added, “CYCU also exposes our students to certain levels of capabilities such as its faculty members' extensive knowledge in research. Majority of them already had their works published in several academic journals.” For the past five years, Mapúa has sent over 30 students to CYCU under the academic exchange program. And since 2008, Mapúans - both faculty and students - have been making a name for themselves. Currently, Mapúa has four academic exchange students undergoing three-month research-internship training at CYCU. One of them is Von Joby Romero, a fourth-year chemical engineering student who is doing his undergraduate thesis at CYCU. “I think the edge of participating in the internship is learning not only international up-to-date engineering research, but also knowing how to communicate effectively with others despite our cultural differences. This experience will also allow me to be equipped with knowledge needed in the actual industry,” said Romero. Mapúa professors Dr. Allan N. Soriano and Dr. Alvin R. Caparanga also collaborated with CYCU professors for their respective research papers. Dr. Soriano was named the Outstanding Young Scientist (OYS) in Chemical Engineering in 2011, while Dr. Caparanga was the OYS in Environmental Engineering in 2010.
