Mapúa student leader recognized as one of BPI’s Most Outstanding Expat Pinoy Children
Adding to Mapúa Institute of Technology’s roster of exemplary student leaders, a fourth year civil engineering (CE) student from the Institute was chosen as one of this year’s Bank of the Philippine Islands’ 10 Most Outstanding Expat Pinoy Children. Aljon Mayuga, the current president of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) - Mapúa Chapter, was one of the seven students who won in the competition’s Ibang Klaseng Talino category. Completing the final 10 were winners from other categories - Ibang Klaseng Community Leader, Ibang Klaseng Entrepreneur and Ibang Klaseng Athlete. The 10 winners were chosen out of the more than 80 contenders. Mayuga said he joined the competition to honor his father, Aladin Mayuga III, who has been working as a seaman for more than two decades now. It was his second time to participate in the contest. “I decided to try my luck again this year because I really wanted to show my parents how grateful I am for all the sacrifices that they’ve done for us especially to my dad, who, for most of my life, has been working hard overseas to provide for us,” he said. Every year, BPI honors 10 children of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), or “anak expats,” who have performed extraordinarily well in their respective fields. The winner in the Ibang Klaseng Talino category was chosen based on the following criteria: 70% for academic excellence, 20% for submitted essays and 10% for non-academic activities. Mayuga admitted that being elected as PICE – Mapúa Chapter president boosted his chances of winning as he was able to participate in several inter-school quiz shows and organize major activities, the most recent of which was the 6th Don Tomas Mapúa Civil Engineering Quiz Show. He was also one of the Mapúans who were recently sent to Cebu City to attend the 38th PICE National Convention.
